CE Makers Can Use Orb To Build Media Apps

Show on home page

Yes

Teaser

Body

Orb Opens Architecture, Licenses Technology to CE Manufacturers
Share and Distribute Content Between Disparate Devices and the Internet

EMERYVILLE, CALIF (February 14, 2008) - Orb Networks (http://www.orb.com), creator of the Orb MyCasting service that allows users to enjoy anything from their PCs on virtually any other internet connected device, has announced a licensing program that will allow manufacturers and service providers to aggregate content from virtually anywhere - connected devices, online and broadband services powered by the internet, and wireless networks. Three partners have already ported the Orb solution to their platform.

Orb’s Embedded Solutions ("OeS") provides a framework to expose, connect, and abstract device capabilities; manage digital assets; make incompatible devices work together; and connect them with online services on multiple screens in an IP world. Orb’s embedded software can tie together digital devices including routers, set-top-boxes, DMAs, smart-TVs, digital photo frames, networked storage devices (NAS), and of course, PCs. Orb expects a new wave of innovation in media consumption as devices can now be linked in a network and integrated with online services, and since OeS is device-independent, a PC is not required.

"The Orb architecture was from the beginning completely modular and dynamic," said Herve Utheza, VP and GM at Orb. "OeS abstracts the capabilities of each application, service, and computing device thereby leveraging the best of peer-to-peer and client / server architectures, and allowing total flexibility in the design of the network, application, and media service. Furthermore, the Orb platform extends the home network to mobile, bringing together all the screens consumers care about, with minimal set-up and networking configuration chores for the user."

Orb’s OeS allows the building of content virtualization and other media-centric applications that drive and connect together disparate hardware devices, as well as supporting exciting new use cases such as:

turning today’s consumer electronics devices into tomorrow’s media servers, manipulating media both inside the home and out

creating single media catalogs from both local and broadband delivered assets making it easy to simplify services for the consumer

decoupling devices’ user interfaces from the device itself, making it easy to access and play any media on any screen

building intelligent and flexible home monitoring solutions for the broadband home, which the user can control anywhere, anytime, from other devices or broadband widgets

extending the power and reach of standards such as DLNA and x10 to legacy devices, or devices which do not natively support these standards, as soon as they are IP connected

enabling new online applications and services capable of reaching out and managing hardware devices

"CE manufacturers can now build differentiated product families which leverage each other’s capabilities while preserving interoperability with industry offerings - bringing the best of open, standards-based solution such as DLNA, while building value-added differentiation enabled by Orb," Utheza said.

The first partners to showcase OeS ported to their devices or integrated with their solutions are:

Buffalo, Inc, which has ported the Orb OeS to its Network Attached Storage platform

Oregan Networks, with its embedded browser and middleware solution for IPTV and embedded devices

ViXS, which brings hardware-based transcoding to the connected CE ecosystem.

Phenomenal Growth Orb Now at 5M Users

Show on home page

Yes

Teaser

Body

Orb Networks Continues Phenomenal Growth, Surpasses 5M - User Mark
Users Taking their Music, Videos, Photos Anywhere, on Any Screen

EMERYVILLE, CALIF (February 12, 2008) - Orb (http://corp.orb.com), which unlocks media stored on a PC and enables users to their enjoy music, videos, webcams, and anything from the web on any device with an internet connection, today announced it had surpassed the 5 million registered-user milestone. Orb, which first launched in 2005, has seen a tremendous spike in users over the past 6 months.

Orb lets users stream - or share with their friends - music, videos, webcams, and any web content, from their PC to other internet-connected devices. Usage patterns indicate that many Orbers use the media center application and service to enjoy their TV, movies and other videos stored on their PCs or on the internet, using game consoles such as the Nintendo Wii, Sony PLAYSTATION 3, and Microsoft Xbox 360.

Another popular use of Orb is to stream music from a home music collection (including purchased downloads from Rhapsody, Napster, Amazon MP3, and eMusic) to a mobile phone. With Orb, there is no need for sync-ing or worry about storage constraints on the phone. Orb works with many of today's popular handsets including models from Apple, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, LG and many more.

"The public has spoken - content is King. And people want to enjoy their digital content - including locally stored music, photos, and videos, as well as webcams and content from the internet - on ANY device, not just the PC where they have traditionally viewed it," said Joe Costello, CEO of Orb. "No one wants to be tethered to their computer in order to enjoy their media. They want all that media, available to them on any screen, at any time."

Orb is available natively at http://corp.orb.com The company works with partners and service providers to deliver Orb functionality under partners' brands, and has begun licensing its technology to device manufacturers and network carriers.

"We are ecstatic about 5 million users, but that's just the tip of the iceberg," said Costello. "People want flexibility in their media consumption. Apple reportedly has sold more than 120 million iPods, demonstrating that people want their music when they're on the go. With Orb, you have total flexibility with nothing else to buy - you can place-shift, or time-shift your media, without ever slinging or synching. Orb lets you stream all your media from your PC to anywhere you have an internet connection. It's that simple."

intouch Demos Embedded Orb App

Show on home page

Yes

Teaser

Body

ORB AND INTOUCH GROUP DEMONSTRATE HANDSET BASED APPLICATION
New application simplifies remote media access and offers delivery management
to wireless service operators

Las Vegas, Nev. - Jan 7th, 2008 - Today at CES, Orb Networks and intouch Group demonstrated a seamless integration between the Orb service platform and intouch's flagship application "iBrowz", which provides 2 click instant access to web content on a mobile handset.

intouch Group developed this integration using the Orb API (http://developer.orb.com), allowing mobile users to access their personal audio and video collection stored on their home computer, from their cell phone. Moreover, the media can be managed so that real time streaming access can be complemented with time-shifted side or down-loading to the device onto an SD card (in the home or over the air), thus helping wireless service operators to better manage their network bandwidth and service exploitation costs.

"This is a great example of how the power of the Orb platform and its APIs can be unleashed by an application developer. This shows that you can use Orb as a platform to build innovative, flexible services," said Joe Costello, Chairman and CEO of Orb.

"We are very excited about our partnership with Orb. It provides a much-needed bridge to PC-based multimedia content," added Joshua D. Kaplan, CEO of Intouch Group. "The solution we are unveiling today offers a tremendous value to wireless carriers, handset manufactures and end users alike."

About intouch group, inc.
intouch group is a mobile applications software developer. Its premier product, iBrowz™, is an On-Device Portal which transforms the smartphone into elegant device where web-based content can be organized and instantly accessed via widgets. iBrowz also provides advertisers with a new way to reach consumers with highly targeted messages.

Body

Video-to-the-TV and Music-on-Mobile Drive New Users to Orb

Four million registered users

Watch PC movies on their TV, stream media to phones and remote PCs

EMERYVILLE, CALIF (December 19, 2007) -- Orb Networks (www.orb.com) this week announced it had reached four million registered users, just weeks after reaching the 2 million milestone. The company said that the spike was driven by users consuming music and videos on their streaming media phones, and the exploding trend of streaming home and internet videos from the PC to the TV, taking advantage of home theater and surround sound systems. The growth in user accounts comes from US as well as international geographies.

Orb's media management software enables users to stream anything on their PCs to virtually any other internet-connected device. Based on usage patterns, a huge spike came from streaming video and music collections from a PC to the TV using a game console like the Nintendo Wii or Microsoft Xbox 360. See the CNET review at http://www.cnettv.com/9742-1_53-31392.html

"Everyone has their photos and music on their PCs. Now, people are downloading movies as well, but who can stand to watch a movie on a 12-in computer screen?" said Joe Costello, CEO of Orb Networks. "With Orb, you can watch those downloaded movies – or any content from your PC – on your 50-inch TV with the surround-sound system. You can even watch internet videos like YouTube on the TV."

First launched in late 2004, Orb handles the media formatting, network connection, and file type discrepancies that typically make streaming live media difficult. Orb's free software and service make it easy to consume media while you are away and to share it with friends and family.

"With Orb on your PC, you don't need to sync a "player" device, or remember to update your collection before you leave the house, or upload anything to the internet," Costello said. "Anything on your PC is accessible, safely and securely, so it's easy to show grandma little Janey's school video, watch TV on your laptop, or play music on your iPhone."

How Orb Works
Orb is a free media sharing application.
Orb Hits 2 Million -- Users want mobile media

Show on home page

Yes

Teaser

Body

Orb Networks Hits 2 Million-User Mark - Users Want Mobile Media
First million users takes 2 years; Second million two weeks

EMERYVILLE, CALIF (November 7, 2007) -- Orb Networks (www.orb.com) announced it had passed two million registered users, just 2 weeks after hitting the 1 million mark. The spike in new users, which comes less than 2 ½ years after the launch of the company's MyCasting software, reflects a 'tipping point' for mobile media. Consumers of all ages and interests want the flexibility to consume their digital media wherever they are and on whatever device they choose.

Orb's MyCasting Service, which enables users to stream anything on their PC - music, videos, photos, even internet content - to any other internet-connected device - another PC, mobile phone, or TV via a game console - recently ranked number 6 in Alexa's "Movers and Shakers" ratings.

"With Orb, you have a single media application that allows you to do all the things that are getting so much press these days - stream music to your mobile phone, watch downloaded movies on your TV, and watch your favorite TV shows while you are away," said Joe Costello, CEO of Orb Networks. "Orb is a single application that can manage all your digital media on your PC, optimize the user experience on the remote devices where you consume your media, and smooth the "gotchas" - media types, streaming rates, network speeds - that often makes consuming media remotely less than optimal."

Two user trends are driving Orb's dramatic success: people are accumulating and storing all their digital media on their computers, and consumer electronics devices now regularly provide access to the internet. For the first time, people don't have to deal with the inconvenience of carrying their media with them. Instead, they can easily consume the media stored on their home computer wherever they have an internet connection.

"With Orb, anything that you can "play" on your PC, can also be "played" on any remote device with a streaming media player and a web browser," said Costello. "That provides a powerful way to enjoy your own music, videos, and photos, and share them with friends and family in a safe and easy way."

How Orb Works
Orb is a free media sharing application.
Your Media Anywhere! Now Stream from the Web

Show on home page

Yes

Teaser

Body

Orb and Agematis Demonstrate "Orb Online"
To PC or not to PC - Users Decide When to Stream Media from the Internet

San Francisco (USA), Paris (France), Orb Networks, whose PC application lets users stream media from their PC to any other internet-connected device, today announced how, with Agematis, users could stream their content without using their PCs.

By integrating the Orb MyCast service with Steek, a network based solution from Agematis, the two companies highlighted the added insurance, convenience, transferability, and anytime access benefits of an internet-based Orb solution. Orb OnLine! extends the Orb media sharing architecture to the internet, providing users with the choice to stream their content via their computer, or from the internet.

"We are always trying to push the envelope of flexibility", said Hervé Utheza, VP & GM of TV Properties. "With this solution, consumers have the best of both worlds - the simplicity of having all their media all in one place on their PC, and the flexibility to stream their favorite media when their computer is turned off or otherwise unavailable."

Orb is working closely with Agematis to provide all Orb users with the ability to access their favorite media while away from home -- on a remote PC or mobile phone -- simply by logging in to Orb's MyCasting service the way they always have. In addition to the added convenience of being able to access their media when their computer is off, these Orb OnLine! features provide an automatic media backup, in case the original media file is corrupted or rendered unusable.

These new features are available upon request for private demonstrations, and are indicative of Orb's commitment to extend the Orb media sharing experience in new and exciting ways.

"We are excited to explore with Orb the advancement of the media consumption universe", said Christophe Camborde, President and CEO of Agematis. "We now enter a world where consumers will consume media coming from, and stored on various devices, servers, PCs and other online resources - all transparently".

The Orb solution provides an easy way for consumers to consume and manage their local and online media, which increases their media consumption. "When you give consumers the power, they consume more - it's not rocket science, and Orb proves it again" added Utheza.

Agematis offers online storage solutions that enable users to transparently upload their personal media files for, storage and back-up . With best in class hosting, security and service levels, and a 40GB/sec multi-operator Internet bandwidth, Agematis and Orb have a commercial-grade solution that will be implemented by partners by the end of this year..

The Agematis Steek service (steek.com) is a virtual internet hard drive that aggregates online and PC content in the same interface. It currently serves 800,000 end users, as part of Agematis' online storage solutions for service providers, USB key manufacturers and internet portals.

Apple TV Functionality to be Available on an OEM Basis

C2Micro and Orb Networks demonstrate next generation reference design for the ConnectedHome

EMERYVILLE, Calif. – September 5, 2007 – C2 Microsystems and Orb Networks, two leaders in digital home entertainment, announced a new reference platform that delivers digital media from the internet or a consumer’s PC, to the TV. The open design is expected to be licensed on an OEM basis by set top box, Cable, Satellite and Media providers and deliver consumer TV and media options far beyond those offered by Apple TV or Sling Media.

The integrated reference platform connects the C2 Micro-powered set top box, embedded media center system, networked portable media player or networked TV, with a PC running the Orb Media Platform. The result is seamless access on the TV to users’ personal media, as well as branded content coming from the home PC or the Internet.

In addition, providers and operators can configure a service where the TV signal – digital, pay or satellite – can be directed from the STB to the PC, leveraging all of Orb’s media management and consumption features, providing the maximum flexibility for the user, including the ability to watch the TV signal on a remote computer or mobile phone.

“We have brought the best of our technologies together to offer the OEM and service operators a breakthrough in cost/performance. Now users can consume ALL their media – branded content and personal content – in a single, friendly system”, said Hervé Utheza, VP & GM, TV Properties at Orb Networks. “And Orb’s advanced sharing and media management features are unmatched in the industry, making it easy for you to send to Grand Ma’, on her TV screen, the pictures of the kids”.

“The MFB reference platform is capable of handling media decoding, encoding, transcoding and transrating at a fraction of the cost of the incumbent designs” said Jinxiang (Gene) Liu, Ph.D. CEO from C2 Microsystems. “We can now offer extremely high performance for designing PayTV or retail products capable to serve, playback and stream all sorts of media. Orb brings to this offering two key pieces of solution: future proofing for the life of the hardware product, as Internet formats will continue to evolve, and a simple media management solution for the consumer to pick the media they want, and enjoy it on the screens they like”, he added.

The MFB reference platform is a programmable solution with extremely high density which offers video processing computing at a fraction of the CPU cycles, thus allowing for high end transcoding, post-processing and decoding / encoding capabilities. It has already shipped in retail products and has already been chosen by leading CE and STB manufacturers around the world.

“We believe that hardware manufacturers are the ideal people to integrate best-of-breed reference platforms” added Utheza. “We saw in the MFB platform a very powerful design which can cost reduce existing designs faster and accelerate the delivery of the ConnectedHome in both retail and PayTV environments,” he concluded.

Orb software is a free application which consumers use to manage and access their favorite media from any screens, allowing for more media consumption, targeted media up-sell, and more.

EMERYVILLE, Calif. – July 19, 2007 – Even as consumers race to buy the latest high-definition (HD) TV hardware and start embracing tomorrow’s television promise, they continue to place more value on the breadth of available programming than on picture quality, according to survey findings announced this week at ITV Con – an Internet TV and interactive TV technologies conference in San Jose, Calif.

“As content providers race to ramp up their digital offerings, the audience continues to see the true future of television more in terms of additional programming choices than better quality,” said Herve Utheza, vice president and generation manager of TV properties for Orb Networks, and presenter of the survey data.

Orb is a free service that enables users to stream their personal and internet content to any other internet-connected device. Orb works with infrastructure providers to design and deliver solutions to create a single-user environment that links personal content on the PC, content resident on, and delivered from, the Internet and “traditional” TV content. Orb’s recent survey asked TV viewers about their preferences for programming and quality.

At press time, the survey results show:

People valued programming choices over TV image quality (74% to 26%)

Looking ahead, to a world where “TV” will soon be offered on a variety of screens from small, to mobile, to large, the percentage of respondents choosing programming choices jumps to 90% against 10% to image quality

Programming choice preferences were highest for news (87%), comedy (83%) and general TV shows (77%)

TV image quality was cited as most important among movies (45%) and sports events (31%)

Movie audiences are pretty much evenly split between choice and quality

Sports is the only category where image quality is the clear winner, but 41% of respondents also admit not being interested in sports

“People want their HD movies or sports on the big screen TV in their living rooms, but they also want to see YouTube videos, Johnny’s baseball game, and their favorite Internet TV program on the big TV,” Utheza said.

Utheza continued, “The Holy Grail for the television industry is creating systems that harness this demand for “new media,” by making it as simple and easy to consume on the TV screen, as today’s TV content. This is where IP delivered TV truly unleashes the promise of tomorrow’s television: a hybrid world of PayTV, personal and “over the top” content where the consumer makes the choice of what they want among branded and “long tail” programming.”
